Things to do in Inwood, NYC

The northernmost part of Manhattan, Inwood is a beautiful neighborhood offering a unique combination of old and new, urban and bucolic. It is a neighborhood with a long history. Its residents get to enjoy some of the finest restaurants and shops in Manhattan, as well as its old buildings and a rich tradition. Whether you want to move there or you’re just visiting, you can rest assured that there are plenty of interesting things to do in Inwood, that will reward anyone who sets foot there.

A visit to Inwood Hill Park is one of the things to do on Inwood

We’ve mentioned that Inwood can boast of having a rich history. Hence, we will begin with an example showcasing that history right away. Namely, Inwood Hill Park is nowadays mostly a thing of the past, the kind of park that’s seldom found in NYC. Case in point: the last natural forest in all of Manhattan is located right here, in Inwood Hill Park. Urban development surrounding this park has avoided it completely. The beautiful nature was left intact for anyone who’s looking to take a break from the busy urban life.

There are many fascinating things to do in Inwood, and visiting the Inwood Hill Park at night is certainly one of them.

Playgrounds, hiking routes, the Hudson River Bike Trail… It’s all there for you to enjoy. While doing so, being aware of all the events that took place here in the past should further engross you in the amazing mood of this park. Perhaps it can even make you consider hiring Inwood based professionals to help you move here. Namely, as you stroll through the park, you can practically see all of its previous inhabitants hiking along with you. The Lenape Indians and the Brits (later turned into Americans) must have loved having this territory be their home.

    Dyckman Farmhouse

Interestingly, a natural forest here isn’t the only thing that’s the last of its kind in all of Manhattan. The last farmhouse in Manhattan is also located in Inwood. So, if you’re thinking about which things to do in Inwood – stop, and go visit the Dyckman Farmhouse! This farmhouse was built during the late 18th century in the style of Dutch colonists. Now, it is a museum that provides its visitors with a colorful touch of history.

The entry fee is donation-based, so you can give as much as you can spare. And you’ll probably want to spare as much as you can, as it is hard not to enjoy yourself in this monument to times long gone. Unfortunately, the surrounding barns and fields have been replaced with stores and more modern houses somewhere around the beginning of the 20th century. Seeing all of that intact would surely have been quite a pleasure, but nevermind – what is still there is quite beautiful nevertheless. It almost makes you want to speed up the process of packing and organizing your belongings, and come visit it as soon as possible.

    Guadalupe

Why is NYC the best place for young adults? There are many reasons. One of the more important ones is that it offers many great places for young people. Young people (and those who feel that way) can enjoy themselves and have fun. This is especially true when it comes to different, deliciously made food. You can taste it in one of the many great places in Inwood. When it comes to food as well, things to do in Inwood are plentiful.

Mexican food served on three plates.
One of the things you can do in Inwood is definitely tasting various types of food.

For starters, you can try the great Mexican restaurant called Guadalupe. What’s offered here is mostly traditional Mexican food that we grew to like just as much as the old American specialties. What separates Guadalupe isn’t the selection, but rather the quality of their food. This restaurant is well-known for its excellent churrasco steak, accompanied by different sauces (we especially recommend the chimichurri sauce). Order some yucca or maduros (or both) with that, and you’re good to go. What’s more, even if you are moving to NYC on a budget, you can still enjoy Guadalupe’s Mexican specialties, as this restaurant is rather affordable.

    Indian Road Café

After enjoying a delicious meal, you can move on to the Indian Road Café. This is a high-quality mixture of a coffee place and a cocktail bar. Interesting drinks are served and most of them taste great! You can go for a Bloody Mary, made in the style of the American Midwest (which means that it is very spicy… yummy!). Also, you can try the very old negroni, or some Genesee Cream Ale if you like. Whatever you choose you’re in for quite a treat!

What’s more, you can eat here as well. And as one would expect after trying their very tasty drinks, the food is equally good. As it is prepared from the products that come straight from the farm, their menu constantly changes. However, one thing that’s always available is their mac and cheese with lobster. Even after having this meal so many times now, we could still go for Indian Road Café mac and cheese lobster right now…

Your stay in Inwood won’t be complete before you’ve had Bloody Mary at the Indian Road Café!

    Dichter Pharmacy Soda Shoppe

… but let’s finish this post first. Once you’re done with the main course, head over to Dichter Pharmacy Soda Shoppe for some dessert. This is an old mom & pop type of shop, the kind that’s slowly but steadily becoming extinct in the USA. As faceless corporations and drugstore chains devoid of personality are establishing the monopoly on the market, these mom & pop shops still enjoy a small but loyal following.

Luckily, that’s not just because they exhibit plenty of personality. While you can get identical medication anywhere, what makes the Dichter Pharmacy Soda Shoppe special are its sweet delicacies, such as bagels, milkshakes, and ice cream cones. Lovingly made and extremely tasty, they’re bound to satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth. The Shoppe’s ice cream parlor is beautifully decorated, exuberating a certain old-fashioned, relaxed glow.

Dichter Pharmacy Soda Shoppe and the other four locations we’ve mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Inwood, NYC. This is certainly one of the best neighborhoods in NYC. Visit it – you won’t regret it.
